Notes |
- On the 1850 Census, Mary J. Allender is shown as the oldest sibling in a family of three children who grow up in Pennsylvania. No censuses have been found for this family for 1860 and 1870. On the 1880 Census both girls appear with their father who is now 70 years old, and he has changed his occupation so he is now a plow maker, where before in 1850 he had been a wagon maker.
Their brother, John, is shown working on a farm on the 1880 Census near Hawkins, Tennessee.
So it is that after the death of their father, it develops that Mary J. and Sarah C. move to Hawkins, Tennessee to live with their brother John, as is shown by the censuses for 1900 and 1910. The move to Tennessee apparently was a catalyst for feelings of independence as the sisters forthwith adopted less formal names. Sarah became Kate based on her middle name of Catharine, presumably, and Mary J. became Jennie, which leads one to believe her middle name must have been Jane.
And then after a period of comfortable and interesting living on John's earnings as publisher and newspaper editor, as shown by the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Jennie and John must have both died, leaving Kate to carry on alone. Neither Jennie nor the brother, John B, are shown with Kate on either the 1920 or 1930 Census.
