    Notes
    • William Daniel Allender was one of the earliest settlers to arrive in Wisconsin. William's children became established in Shawano County in the early years after their arrival in Milwaukee. Paula Vaughan and Christy Allender, among others, have documented the family history of William's line. Records are preserved for the Wisconsin branch of the Allenders on ancestry.com by Christy.
William Daniel Allender moved from Belmont County, Ohio (where he married Sarah Lashley) to Michigan City, Indiana, and from that point to Milwaukee in 1838. Upon arriving in Milwaukee, he was employed by Byron Kilbourn for about four years; then moved nine miles out to Purple Creek, where he took up a homestead of 160 acres, and began at once to clear it. On this place he lived about 12 years, during which time he cleared eighty acres; sold out about the year 1855, removed to Omro, Wisconsin, and purchased a marsh which proved a poor investment. He next engaged in hotel keeping at the Embarrass River in Shawano. remaining some five years and meeting with good success. From there he moved to Wolf River, where he took up a homestead and occupied that during the rest of his life. He died when seventy nine years of age. His wife died when 72.
1880 census states his father was born in Maryland; his mother in England; his wife on that census states her father was born in Ohio, and her mother in Germany.

A Heritage Day event at the Comfort Inn and Suites celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the town, which borders the city of Shawano on the south. About 300 people attended a luncheon sponsored by the Clover Leaf Lakes Protective Association, then viewed historical displays and visited with storytellers who talked about the town’s history, including churches, schools, early settlers, agriculture, forestry and the lakes. “One hundred and fifty years isn’t that old,” Town Chairman Alvin Bartz said, pointing out former Treasurer Ken Rosenow served in office for one-third of that time. Agriculture was a way of life for much of the town’s history, he said, and now that agriculture is tied into the global economy. “My grandpa lived with us (on the family’s century farm) and his entertainment was visiting with the neighbors,” Bartz said. “Their neighbors were important to them. Threshing crews would help each other and weddings were a big event, going on for two or three days.” Bob Tomashek talked about being a great-grandson of Tom Allender, the first settler in Belle Plaine. Allender poled up the Embarrass River in 1850 and settled along the river. Tomashek, Clover Leaf Lakes Association president, said his group “got things rolling” on the town???s celebration and Heritage Day will kick off a year-long educational program, Adventures in Lake Living, for lake residents and anyone interested in knowing more about the lake environment. Resident Yvonne Kriewaldt said she enjoyed sharing memories with long-time residents. The collections of historical photos showed her “you shouldn’t throw away stuff.” “I remember as a kid on Sundays after church going with my grandpa to Raasch’s cheese factory to get a fruit jar full of fresh cream, a necessary ingredient for an ethnic chicken dish,” said Jody Ebeling, who now lives in De Pere. “As a treat, Mr. Raasch would scoop up some fresh curds.” The town officially formed in 1858, separated from the town of Matteson, by order of the Shawano County Board. “Treasures in Time,??? a book compiled by Marcalene Rosenow and the Shawano County Historical Society, chronicles the history of Belle Plaine from the early days through the present. “Happy birthday to the town of Belle Plaine — a beautiful part of Wisconsin, ” said Mike and Bea Moede. The town plans another celebration as part of the annual car show at Maple Lane Health Care Center in July and the Historical Society will feature the town’s history at the Shawano County Fair in late August.
