    Notes
    • Baker Maurice Allender is the namesake of Maurice Baker (b. 1754), who is the husband of his father's 2nd cousin, Mary Allender, the daughter of Nicholas and Jane (Day) Allender. Maurice is supposedly descended from a Morice Baker who died in the massacre at Jamestown in 1622. Evidence from census record 1810 leads one to suspect that naming of his son after Maurice grew out of gratitude of the younger Richard for the presence and support of his older relative during some difficult times for the growing family. In 1810, the families of Richard, Maurice and Allexander Baker (b. 1782), son to Maurice, all are shown on the Census living close to one another at Upper Jerusalem and Antietam, Maryland. This is two years after the 1808 deaths of two of his children, Archebald and Sarah, and two years before Baker is born in 1812. The Census for 1820 shows another couple living with Richard and his family. No 1830 census has been found for Baker, his siblings and parents. In 1838 they have moved to Iowa, and in 1841 we see Baker indexed in ancestry.com:
Baker Morris Allender is shown registered at the Land Office in Burlington, Iowa Territory obtaining a Land patent on Dec. 1, 1841 on 71.84 acres.
In the 1850 census Alexander Baker, son to Maurice, is shown living with his family in Marion, Missouri --and Richard is living too, at 83 years of age, with Baker in Jefferson, Iowa. Perhaps he tells Baker how he got his name and of the old days back in Upper Jerusalem and Antietam.
Then in 1888 there is born Baker's grandson who is given the name Baker Morris, so the name lives on and family legends continue to grow.
A third namesake to Maurice Baker (b. 1754) makes his appearance in 1923 in Clinton, Iowa. He is the great grandson to Baker (b. 1812), a nephew to Baker (b. 1888) and the second son of Frank and Lillian Allender. This Maurice Baker Allender died, a hero's death, on Omaha Beach in 1944.
