    Notes
    • According to 1840 Census records, it appears that George must have sent his brother John and sister Nancy to Columbiana County to tend the mill he had inherited from his father, while he stayed in Westmoreland County, where he is shown living with his two younger brothers (between ages 15-20), his wife, new born son (John C.) and mother. By 1844, both John and George, their wives and children, their brother William, sister Nancy and mother Margaret had all relocated in Van Buren County, Iowa and set up a Mill in that county. According to the 1860 Census, this business prospered and George was worth $25,000. By the time of the 1870 Census this figure had grown to $45,000. After nearly 30 years as a successful mill owner, this member of the 1st Iowa Legislature, an admired citizen of the community, who up to now had left no record of close religious affiliation, gave up his prominent position in an established community and moved with his family to the Territory of Idaho to become a circuit riding pastor for the newly formed M. E. circuit. He and his family were among the 15 founding members of the first Methodist Church established in Boise City, Nov. 23, 1872.
Their names are listed among the 15 charter members on page 59 of the book: The Founding fathers of Boise / by Hugh H. Hartman as follows: Martin Mc Hendry, steward; G.C. Allender, local preacher; Margaret Allender, Nancy McHendry, Ann P. Allender.
Perhaps the new career, proved taxing for a man nearing his 68th birthday and he died unexpectedly in 1879. His mother had died in 1873 and the other family members outlived him -- Ann, by nearly 15 years. She died in 1894; and then in quick sucession went Nancy (1897), Martin (1898), and Edward (1899) and then William, Civil War Veteran, and youngest child of Edward and Margaret, in 1904. Then all were gone, and the children of Edward, who in his will charged his son, George, to care for his siblings are buried near to each other, except for John, in the Star Cemetery, Ada County, Idaho.

From the Idaho Statesman March 29, 1879:
Allender: At his home in Boise Valley, March 23rd, 1879, Rev. S [sic] C. Allender, of the M.E. Church, aged 67 years, 9 months, and 11days.
Mr. Allender had been appointed to the Boise Valley Circuit and was much beloved by the people in his field of labor, where he was rendering, at the time of his being stricken down, much needed and valuable service. He was an estimable and worthy man, and in his death the church has lost a zealous and faithful minister, and the people a warm hearted and devoted friend. He leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted and affectionate wife, who for many long years had shared with him the labors and hardships of a pioneer minister in a new country.
